CAUTION - CONTAINS SPOILERS

Fantasy novels have a knack for pulling us into worlds where anything is possible, and Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros have done just that. The fantasy genre's magic seems to be calling readers back into its fold, and I am no exception. There’s something irresistibly immersive about joining Violet Sorrengail as she uncovers her powers, confronts complex alliances, and navigates the labyrinth of her own mind. As I devour these books, I'm left with burning questions—specifically about Violet's second signet—and even more theories. Here are my top three theories for what Violet’s second signet could be and some lingering questions about Xaden’s connection to the Venin.

Theory 1 - Precognition: Seeing and Sensing Into the Future

There's evidence in Iron Flame that hints at Violet’s ability to foresee future events, though subtly. One early moment happens when Violet senses she won’t be seeing Xaden the following week while on leave to Samara —a seemingly random feeling that proves true. Then, there’s the scene that happens right after she pulled a dagger on Riddoc for coming up behind her. Her and her squad are walking to class, and she feels her heart racing and she looks around the corner, apparently feeling imminent danger, only to be taken in for interrogation. This “sixth sense” or heightened awareness could well be precognition, enabling her to anticipate threats or key events. Another example is when she faces the Venin with Mira in Cordyn; Violet starts to cite scribe knowledge because why... because her adrenaline was racing! This was right before the Venin popped out of the chest. Perhaps even the haunting dreams of the Venin are her mind processing forewarnings, hinting at events that have yet to unfold. Is this an inherent gift developing with her bond, or is it unique to her role in the coming battles?

Theory 2 - Shielding: Protection for the Mind

Violet’s natural aptitude for shielding is another compelling theory. She can block out Xaden's mind-link and even shield herself from Varrish’s probing, which suggests that her mind has defenses beyond what’s typical. With Xaden’s connection to the Venin, shielding may become even more crucial, helping her guard against their influence or maintain her independence. A strong shield could also allow her to shut off Tairn if she needs to, freeing her for dangerous adventures alongside Andarna. Violet’s ability to safeguard her thoughts and emotions could become her greatest asset, especially in a world where her very mind could be her most vulnerable point.

Theory 3 - Time Manipulation or Travel

This theory might be a stretch, but bear with me! Throughout Iron Flame, there are moments where Violet’s perception of time seems to shift—she senses it slowing down, as if slipping into another temporal layer. Could it be that she’s somehow connected to time itself? Imagine the potential: if Violet could travel back or tap into past memories (perhaps even those of previous riders), she could uncover truths and historical secrets firsthand. Though it might not be her actual signet, the idea of time manipulation adds a thrilling dimension to her quest for knowledge and truth, especially as someone so keen on uncovering the mysteries of her world.

XADEN

Thoughts on Xaden: A Tether with the Venin?

One of the most compelling mysteries surrounds Xaden's connection to the Venin. After he rescues Violet from being tortured by Varrish, he warns Basgiath about an inevitable Venin invasion with unnerving accuracy. He specifically said that the Venin will come to Basgiath and come for the hatching grounds. How does he know this? Does he experience their intentions in his dreams, similar to Violet? Or is his connection more profound? Perhaps he shares a psychic link with someone from the Venin, possibly Brennan, whose rune-marked hand suggests a past resurrection or involvement with the Venin. Could this link act as a conduit for information, allowing him to sense their plans and intentions?

These theories only scratch the surface of Yarros' intricate world-building, and I can't wait to see where she takes these characters next. Each layer of mystery adds to the anticipation, making the journey all the more enthralling. Whether it's delving into Violet's true power or unraveling Xaden’s strange connection to the Venin, Iron Flame has reignited my love for fantasy and speculation. If you’re a fan of twists, complex characters, and epic revelations, these novels are an absolute must-read.
